About the author
The original text was prepared by Carol Jones, John Harbinson and Peter Bowie. Each of them had been involved in supporting, training, supervising or counselling bereaved people. They have each trained in bereavement agencies. Each had entered hours of discussion with many other trainers, and are indebted to them for much of the approach suggested.
Eventually it was decided to adapt the work for people who wish to support their bereaved neighbour, friend or colleague without reference to an agency. This is because though many people are needed in this role, few have either the knowledge or confidence to offer to help. But also because we realized that, from the early days of each training course, we had learnt a lot about the responses and needs of initially untrained people. Peter Bowie undertook this final task; any errors or confusions are his responsibility.
